Hijab-wearing gamers have a special place in the gaming community. In fact, many of them have been recognized for their contributions to the culture of gaming. As such, it is important that we take a moment to acknowledge their impact.


Chiang's rise to lead role in UCI's snazzy new gaming arena

The University of California, Irvine, or UCI, has a large gaming community. It is home to the Association of Gamers, which boasts the largest membership in the country. At least 72 percent of students at UCI identify as gamers.

A recent survey found that nearly one-third of female students surveyed felt harassed in the gaming world. Chiang is working to create a community for women gamers.

Chiang, a computer game science major, discovered Ragnarok Online as a young girl. She has been immersed in the online gaming community for more than a decade.

As a student at UCI, she joined the League of Legends club. In addition, she co-founded The Association of Gamers. These groups are the backbone of the campus's esports program.

Chiang also serves as the arena coordinator for the university's new gaming center. Located in the Student Center Terrace, the 3500-square-foot arena is the result of a $250,000 conversion.

The arena features a two-tiered stage, comfortable seating, and professional lighting. Spectators can watch games live and streamed on the arena's monitors.

The arena is also equipped with 36 high-end PCs from iBUYPOWER. These computers are powered by Intel Core i7-9700k processors and GeForce RTX 2070 8-gigabyte graphics cards. They are kept running by ggLeap, an esports management software.

UCI has an official League of Legends team that will debut this fall. Students can also earn scholarships for participating on the team. Teams compete in national tournaments. Those who win are awarded $15,000 each.

As part of the esports initiative, the university is partnering with industry leaders, including NZXT, a computer component manufacturer in Los Angeles. In return, the company will provide support for student scholarships.


Torkia's decision to discontinue wearing her headscarf

A well known British Muslim blogger recently sparked controversy with the removal of a hijab. She opted out of the rigors of wearing a full head covering in order to promote her modest fashion based brand. This did not go down well with her followers.

In fact, her social media accounts have been subjected to a flood of vitriol from a group of self proclaimed conservative minded fellow Muslims. The aforementioned naysayers have even threatened her family. One has even written an article for the prestigious The Telegraph highlighting the issue.

On the topic of hijab, the blogger and her fellow fashionista, Torkia, is no stranger to the wrath of the internet. She started blogging about fashion almost ten years ago. Before she was bitten by the internet bug, she was an avid reader of fashion magazines. That being said, her style lacked the pizazz of many of her peers. It was only after she started her YouTube channel that she began to see the light of the fashion world.

One could argue that the vlogging and blogging life is no longer a dream for the blogger, but Torkia has been able to maintain her modesty despite the ire of her peers. Having a baby hasn't diminished her love of style. With her two children in tow, she still wears a modest dress from neck to feet.

Despite her hijab removal, her blog and YouTube channel continue to attract hundreds of thousands of subscribers. However, the comments have been a mixed bag. While some have lauded her choice as a sign of her unwavering moral character, others have questioned her sanity.

She did not respond to Daily Dot requests for comment. Nonetheless, she has garnered the most buzz of any YouTube vlogger to date.

Zandt's work with Twitter to reduce online threats against women

A press release issued by Women, Action, & the Media (WAM!) states that the organization has partnered with Twitter to help reduce online threats against women gamers. The group promises to be a "trusted reporter" on the platform, collecting and escalating reports on harassment and hate speech.

While Twitter claims to have taken action against hate speech, they have failed to do the same against abusive content. An Amnesty International study found 1.1 million abusive tweets sent to 778 women. This did not include tweets that were deleted or accounts that were suspended.

Often times, the harassers are loosely organized and spread across several platforms. In the case of Zoe Quinn, her ex-boyfriend accused her of sleeping with her reporter. Meanwhile, a UK Channel 4 news presenter brought in security experts to check for threats.

Among the findings of the report was that terms like rape, whore, and slut were used in tweets. Women of color were also more likely to be mentioned in the abusive tweets.

Prominent women are regularly targeted for abuse on the web. In fact, one-quarter of 18-to-24-year-old women reported online stalking. One of the most prominent instances was when the South by Southwest festival canceled two panels on the topic.

As a result of these cases, many high-profile female journalists take multiple precautions to protect themselves. According to a recent survey by the Association for Progressive Communications, 51% of sexual rights activists have been attacked online.

Law enforcement is often poorly resourced to address issues such as these. However, the United Nations Declaration on Human Rights Defenders, a statement reaffirming the rights of all human beings, explicitly recognizes the risk of online violence against women's rights activists.
